#008: Power Play – Small Steps

There are days when life can feel overwhelming and every decision seems like it will have a huge impact on your life.  They say that you shouldn’t make big decisions when you’re feeling depressed, but what if your good days are few and every decision feels like a big one?  Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the big picture, what if you just took one small step?

If you know you should exercise (it has amazing benefits for your physical and mental health!) but you can’t find the energy, tell yourself that you’ll exercise for only 10 minutes.  If you feel like doing more than that after you get started?  Great!  If not, you have still accomplished more than if you hadn’t taken that step!  If you’re looking for a job but feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, make a list of things you could do (update your resume, search job listings, talk to people who may be able to help you, send out your resume), and just do one of those things.  Even a small step is moving you forward and can make you feel good about your progress.

The reason we get overwhelmed is because we feel like we have a huge mountain to climb and that voice in our head tells us that it’s too much for us to handle.  Either things start to pile up, or we feel like every decision is a big one.  When that happens, try to keep perspective and break it up into small tasks so that you have something you can work with.  No matter how small the step is, it will get you closer to your goal than you were before and give you a sense of accomplishment.

Game Plan:  Whatever it is that you want to accomplish, think of one small step you can take today that will point you in the right direction.  Don’t worry about the end point – each of those steps are moving you towards your goal.
