This is such a widely used quote outside of hockey (I remember a poster of it at school, and Michael Scott even gave himself credit for repeating it), but it’s so popular because it’s simple – you can’t score if you don’t take a shot.
Fun fact: the quote actually comes from The Hockey News (January 16, 1983 ed.) when Bob McKenzie (the editor at the time) said to Gretzky, “You have taken a lot of shots this year”, to which Wayne replied, “You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take, even though there is only a 1-5% probability of scoring.” The thing is, there are times when you will fail or something won’t work out – in hockey, the majority of the shots don’t make it in the net – but you’ll never know if you don’t try.
Game Plan: Get out there and start taking shots! Don’t worry about being perfect – every little thing you do in pursuit of your goal is bringing you one step closer.
