It can be really hard to be optimistic when you’re feeling really down on yourself and the negative thoughts are overpowering the positive. For athletes, optimism affects your ability to succeed. If your team is on a losing streak and you start thinking, “we’re losers… we’ll never win a game… we’re not good enough to compete anymore…” it’s going to be awfully hard to get out of that slump. It’s the same for anyone – if you are always thinking the worst, those thoughts can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Sometimes it can be difficult to stop the negative thoughts from coming, but that doesn’t mean that you have to give them any weight. Look for the opportunity in every difficulty and it will be easier to envision success in your future.
Game Plan: The next time you have a negative thought, catch yourself and try to turn it into something positive by either discrediting it or focusing on what you can change, the opportunity. You have power over your thoughts.
