In Toward the Goal, David Booth mentions Psalm 51:10 as one of his favourite verses: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. In this psalm, (King) David is acknowledging that he has made mistakes (and that he will continue to make mistakes), but is asking for God to forgive him. When you ask for forgiveness, God has already forgiven you. He doesn’t want you to keep beating yourself up for what has happened in the past – He wants you to forgive yourself.
David (Booth) uses it as a “morning prayer for a fresh start. When we slip, fall, or drift away from God for a little bit, He gives us a second and third chance.” Remember that no matter what you do, God will always give you another chance. I keep a reminder of this in my bathroom so that I see it every morning – every day is a chance to rise from whatever guilt, sadness, or regret is in your past, and shine with the glory of God in your heart!
Game Plan: Give yourself a fresh start every morning and don’t hold your past against you. God has given you another chance, and you need to allow yourself the same. As Bob Goff said, “We spend a lot of time remembering failures God spent a lot of love saying we could forget.”
