James Reimer had this quote painted on the backplate of his mask as a reminder to stay focused on what’s important. “When you focus on all the crap that’s going on around you, then you’re going to sink,” Reimer says. “But if you focus on Jesus, in my case, then all those things seem to fade away … and you can do amazing things.”
Even if you’re not an NHL player with obstacles like media and “fan” criticism, hyping games up as if they’re life or death, or worrying about being traded at any moment, we all deal with our own obstacles in our lives. Maybe they come in the form of distractions, stress, conflict with other people, or just having a bad day. Our worst obstacles are internal (that voice that tells you you’re not good enough, fear of failure or rejection) and can be huge barriers to realizing your dream or being the person you want to be. But remember that if your mind is powerful enough to hold you back, you can also overcome those barriers by focusing on the goal rather than any obstacle that is between you and what you want to be.
Game Plan: Pay attention to any obstacles that are preventing you from achieving your goals and identify how you can overcome them. Don’t let anything stop you from being the person you want to be, even if you’re experiencing a stressful situation.
