Sometimes we get hung up on all of the things that we can’t do and forget about all of the things that we can. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t keep trying new things and practicing skills that you want to improve, but it’s probably best to focus your energy on those things that you’re good at and want to keep working on.
You were born with special skills and abilities, and have also developed new ones along the way. Sometimes we look at what other people can do and ask ourselves why we aren’t very good at it, but we don’t think about those abilities that are unique to us. One of my high school teachers told us that she always thought that music was easy, but she realized later that it wasn’t easy for everyone – it was easy for her because she had a natural ability and enjoyed it. You might not have strong skills in math, sports, or writing, but you are skilled at playing an instrument, editing videos, or listening and helping people with their problems. Just because something comes naturally to you doesn’t mean you should discount it. Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do.
Game Plan: Make a list of the things that you’re good at and enjoy doing. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, put your energy into the things that you can.
