#109: Power Play – Tell someone they matter

Because you matter, you can make a difference in the world by letting someone else know that they matter too.  One of the most powerful things you can do is to let others know that you notice and believe in them, to show them that someone cares.  It’s such a small thing that doesn’t cost you anything, but can make a world of difference in someone else’s life.

Game Plan:  Tell or show someone how much they matter to you.  Believe in someone.  Ask meaningful questions about how they’re doing and what they’re interested in.  Show them that you’re listening and care about what they have to say.  Check in on someone you haven’t talked to in awhile.  Encourage them.  Acknowledge them.  Let them know you appreciate them.  Don’t assume that they already know.  Tell them, “You Matter.”

“More and more I’ve come to understand that listening is one of the most important things we can do for one another…. It can often be our greatest gift. Whether that person is speaking or playing or dancing, building or singing or painting, if we care, we can listen.”

– Fred Rogers, “The World According to Mr. Rogers.”
