Have you ever felt like you’re living in an interim period of life? Maybe you’re wrapping everything up and getting ready to move, maybe you’re in between jobs or in between school and figuring out what you want to do in your ‘grown up life’. It might feel like you’re waiting for ‘real life’ to begin, but real life is interim. This is what it is. Even those long periods that seem to be stable lead us on a path to the next thing. Until we get to heaven, we won’t arrive. We can make plans, we can make goals, but anything can happen.
Those ‘interim’ periods can feel scary because we don’t know what’s next, but when do we ever really know how things will turn out, what surprises or disappointments may come our way? We are always in that in-between middle space, but it’s in that space that we can grow and become who we are.
Thank God I was wrong about everything I had planned. Thank God we weren’t on my schedule, because even though I dragged my heels and checked my planner every five seconds while I watched my life change in his hands, I really like the place we’ve ended up, and the things I’ve seen along the way. – Shauna Niequist
Game Plan: Write the future in pencil, not in pen. Make plans and dreams, but plan lightly and be open to changing them. Anything can happen and God can lead us in ways that we could never have predicted, but with surprises comes hope. Be okay with not knowing what will come next.
