#324: Power Play – The Buried Life

Heart and Ice Power Play - The Buried Life

All men dream: but not equally.  Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible.  – T.E. Lawrence

A few years ago there was a show about four college students who came together in the midst of varying degrees of depression and feeling lost in life to start a project.  They called it ‘The Buried Life’ after a poem written by Matthew Arnold, and their goal was to cross as many items off of their bucket lists as possible, while also helping others with their own dreams.

It’s never too late to be what you might have been. – George Eliot

Their lists ranged from donating blood, planting a tree, protesting something, and kissing the Stanley Cup, to making a TV show, writing a book, dancing with Ellen DeGeneres and playing ball with the President.  The thing is, when you start to achieve bigger and bigger dreams, you have no choice but to believe that pretty much anything you want in this world can be possible.  These were just four guys who wanted something more in life, and by dreaming big and pursuing those dreams they have been able to cross many of those things off on their list (and continue adding to it!).

I recently read a book by Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, titled ‘The Business of Happiness.’  He believes that one of the best things he did for his own success and happiness was to create a life list of goals he wanted to accomplish, places he wanted to go, things he wanted to get involved in.  For him it wasn’t just about crossing everything off the list, but living life on purpose and having hope for the future.

“I always lived my life expecting to be happy someday, but I had never even really stopped to think what would actually make me happy.  I just figured it would happen eventually.”  – Duncan Penn

Game Plan:  Take an active role in your own happiness and start your list or add to it now.  Put things on the list that you’ve already done, and choose one thing that you want to complete or work towards next.
