Welcome to Heart & Ice! My name is Erin, and I started this blog as a way to combine my passions: hockey, inspirational quotes, and my faith.
As someone who has struggled with depression, I am really interested in mental health and positive psychology. Being a hockey addict (forever a Canucks fan), I also love sports psychology and how you can apply it to life. One of the reasons why I love hockey culture so much is because the way I see it, hockey mirrors life. Teams and players go through high points and low points, injuries, setbacks, wins, and losses.
When I experienced my first period of depression a few years ago, I was confused about the way I was feeling and I felt like there was something wrong with me. It was the story of Rick Rypien, Mind Check (I highly recommend checking out their information, quizzes, and resources), and positive messages from people like Kevin Bieksa that gave me hope, helped me to realize that it was not my fault, and how important it is to let someone else know how you are feeling. Like Kevin Bieksa says, trying to ignore your feelings doesn’t help, and it is not a burden on those you love to ask for help.
Another thing I love about hockey are the strong Christian role models. Some are more vocal about it than others, but they all share their faith in their own way. Hockey Ministries International does a lot of work at all levels of hockey and has a couple of excellent books with stories of NHLers who have each gone through their own struggles related to life, hockey, and faith. My personal role model is David Booth, who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, and looks to honour God throughout all of the criticism and struggles he has gone through these past few years. I still struggle with depression today, but what helps me is to look to role models who are battling their own struggles but keeping the faith, finding a sense of purpose in each day, and putting my trust in God.
It may seem a little strange to have a blog that covers hockey, God, and mental health, but those are three huge things in my life, and as much as I hope that it can help others, I am also writing it for myself. My main goal for this blog is a series called ‘Power Play’ where I’ll share a quote, short comment, and then a ‘game plan’ as a goal for the day, but I’ll also share other things that I find helpful or that give a boost of ‘happy’. My hope is that it might provide a little inspiration and motivation to start the day off right (for all of us!)
